Nickname "Flea", why? I have been known as Flea since I was in my first year at Uni, when someone tried to say 'Fi' and it came out as 'Flea'. For some reason the name stuck!

Kayaking: I joined Reading University Canoe Club in 1994, I actually wanted to join the windsurfing club but there wasn't one! This was my first time in a boat, back then the socials were much more enjoyable than getting cold and wet in a kayak, but I did like the challenge of paddling the rivers and learning to roll.

Playboating: As soon as I got a car (after I had left Uni in 1997) I discovered the joys of paddling at my local playspot - Hurley weir: Freezing hands/toes; warming in the East Arms pub afterwards; new moves; new friends and new boats!

Freestyle Competition: I entered my first competition in 1998 at Hurley Weir - I was rubbish,  but it was fun and the atmosphere of the comp was great. Luckily my paddling improved that year, and by December 1998 I was ranked in the top 5 in GB and placed 5th in the Pre-Worlds at FulJames, NZ. Since then I have been selected for the GB team every year, and have obtained a number of national and international wins. (see Results )

River running: It has been known for me to venture onto a river or two, especially when travelling, but creek-boating in this country is made difficult by unpredictable water levels. Too many wasted journeys to Wales and the South West have put me off taking the creek boat with me. Generally, I have a bit of a dislike for rocks so I prefer the big water river-running.

Travelling: Paddling destinations include NZ, Oz, East Canada/USA, West Canada, Uganda, Europe (France, Spain, Austria). Would like to visit: Nepal, Norway, South America.

Other sports: I occasionally go to the gym. Also enjoy mountain biking in the summer (or when there's no water for boating). I occasionally venture onto the rocks for a bit of climbing and I would still like to take up that windsurfing that I was going to start doing 10 years ago at Uni!

Job: Primary School Teacher, currently doing supply work. I have now completed my NQT year so I am fully qualified. My next step, perhaps when I have finished competing, will be progressing towards Special Needs Education.
